Search term: Contains, Is, Starts with
You can choose between three different options for the search in the Gazetteer as well as in the person-related databases:
Contains: Finds all records that contain the sequence of letters you have entered. Examples: Contains = "Jose" finds records for "Josef", "Joseph", "Franz Josef", "Josefa", "Maria Josepha", etc. Contains = "Hofer" finds records for "Hofer", "Hoferin", "Mayerhofer", etc.
Note: Using "contains" will give you more hits, but the results are less specific and the search will take more time for technical reasons.
Is: Finds all records that exactly match the sequence of letters you have entered. Example: Is = "Maria" only finds records for "Maria", but none for "Marie", "Anna Maria", "Maria Anna", etc.
Starts with: Finds all records that start with the sequence of letters you have entered. Example: In the Gazetteer, Starts with = "Aigen" finds all places that start with "Aigen", e.g. "Aigendorf", but none for "Außeraigen", "Großaigen", "Neuaigen", etc.
Automatic search term completion ("autocomplete")
In the search fields for places, last names and first names, GenTeam automatically completes your search term while you are entering it. As soon as you have entered three or more letters, GenTeam presents you with a list of all occurrences that match your input.
This feature is particularly useful if you cannot read all the letters of a place or a name. In such a case, enter only the sequence of letters you are sure of reading correctly. Automatic search term completion is also very helpful for names with various spellings.
Examples: "Pock" also finds records with the spelling "Pockh" "Wurm" also finds records with the spelling "Wurmb"
GenTeam does not support the use of wildcard characters (*, ?).
Help/Info: Important information on the content of the databases GenTeam provides you with detailed information on most of the individual databases. The following examples show what type of information is given.
Examples:
- Gazetteer: The countries included as well as what kind of information you will find for each place
- Indices of church records (Vienna: baptisms, marriages, burials; outside of Vienna: Catholic, Protestant, Jewish): List of the parishes/Kultusgemeinden, type of record, years covered
- Medical doctors from Vienna: Type of documents contained in the database, years covered
How to find this information:
- In the tree structure on the left, click the main entry to which the database belongs.
- Next, click on the respective sub entry.
- The database is now displayed in the right part of GenTeam.
In the upper right corner, click the Help/Info button.
Overall search or searches in the individual databases ?
The Overall search covers all databases except the Gazetteer. It serves as a first overview if you do not yet know whether the name you are looking for is available on GenTeam and in which database you will find records for it. Here, searches can only be carried out on the basis of the last name and first name.
In the individual databases, searches are not only faster but can also be defined more precisely, for example by specifying a crown land, a time period or a type of event (baptisms, marriages, burials, etc.).
