Gazetteer

Gazetteer of Czech, Austrian and Slovenian Republic

In this database you will find about 72.000 locations in Austria (with South Tirol) and in the Czech and Slovenian republics. It contains former and present names of locations, current and former parish affiliation, year that existing records begin, archival districts, and political districts or crownland.

If you are uncertain about the correct spelling of a location, you may also search for a portion of its name. This will produce a larger number of results, and also to the correct village.

For example: Langendorf

  • "Is" will generate 9 hits in the database
  • "Starts with" will generate 11 , also ie Langendörflas
  • "Contains" will generate 19 results, also ie Neu Langendorf or Unter Langendorf

You may also purchase the gazetteers of Bohemia, Moravia, Austria (without South Tirol) and Slovania at IHFF (www.ihff.at). They can be used in the archives where you will always find new locations during research.

Roman Catholic Marriages

Index of Roman Catholic marriages of Vienna between 1542 and 1850/1860

As the capital of the Austrian-Hungarian Dual Monarchy, Vienna grew considerably during the 19th century: from about 215.000 inhabitants in 1800 up to more than 2.1 million in 1910. Many migrated to Vienna, especially from the crown lands, and left here their genealogical tracks or never left Vienna.

It is not easy to find a marriage in Vienna because of the large number of parishes within its boundaries.

This database contains about 842.000 records from all parishes of present-day Vienna, surrounding communities, and from the military.

The indices of the records of the districts 1-5, 1780-1850, are from the "Index Nominum ex libris copulatorum Vindobinensibus" from Herbert A. Mansfeld and Hans Bergauer, and could be stored with the honest allowance of the society "Heraldische Gesellschaft Adler" (http:///www.adler-wien.at/).

The columns are:

  • continuing number - for possible references
  • surname
  • given name (not in some parishes of the first district before 1780)
  • year (not in some less cases)
  • parish (with number of the district; XX is military; NÖ is Lower Austria)
  • page in the related book

You can find the mailing addresses of the parishes on the (German) site: www.stephanscom.at
except: St. Stephan: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

records of parish Schotten are online at www.Matricula-Online.eu

This project is finished. Additional indices of parishes will be stored in the record-index-project. All of the original records of the Archdiocese are still stored in respective parish offices. Military records can be found in the war archives, which may be found in the Austrian State Archives in Vienna.

CAUTION: this databases may not be free of wrong entries!

This database is also available in form of books:

Mansfeld and Bergauer may be purchased at the society Adler; all other books of about 5.500 pages can be purchased from IHFF (www.ihff.at).

Roman Catholic Baptisms

Index of the Roman Catholic Baptisms for Vienna and its surroundings between 1585 and 1900

Beginning of the project: October 2012

In the 19th century approximately 3,5 million people from all the countries of the Habsburg Monarchy (and beyond) moved to Vienna. In 1910 Vienna’s population was approximately 2.1 million. Vienna was then the sixth largest city in the world. Almost all families in the monarchy had family connections to the city of Vienna.

Between 1784 and 1900 approximately 4-6 million children were born in Vienna. Unfortunately, to date there still is no central birth registry for Vienna besides the Jewish Birth Registry already published on www.GenTeam.eu.

In cooperation with Vienna parish offices, we have now begun to create this missing index and post it online. We will favor the Districts 1 – 9 for the years 1784 – 1900, even though parallel parish registers were started in other districts. Also, additional issues of various parishes are already work in progress. We review the existing indices; subsequently they will be rearranged on transparencies, compared with the original entries and then corrected as needed. Thus, the quality of the index will be assured. At this time are approximately 630.000 entries available.

The following individuals have collaborated in this project: Martina Ecker, Felix Gundacker, Helga Hörmann, Cindy Lindau, Daniela Mathuber, Marta Melchart, Dr. Günter Oppitz, Andrea Reiter, Ernst Schroth, Gerda Smodej, Judith Starke, HR.DI Leopold Strenn, Walter Thurner, Mireille Trauner, Christine Weiß und Werner Zinser.

The parish registers will be available online in the near future; some are free of charge already partially accessible at www.matricula-online.eu. Thus, the researcher has relatively quick access to the original entries, even though here and there might be multiple entries.

I invite you all to help with this fascinating project. Neither travel nor visits to parish offices are required; the indices can be furnished in digital form. There are only a few typed indices, fewer beautifully hand-written and some not so beautiful hand-written indices available; however, I am sure, there will be something for everybody who is interested in helping.

If you have any questions or if I can be of further assistance, please contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Kind regards,

Protestant Records

Indices of Protestant Records in Vienna

Since 1783, two different Protestant Parishes exist in Vienna: AC and HC. As a first step indices of marriages of the parish AB between 1783 and 1860 are available now. These records are not on microfilm or digital, but only available in the parish office.

Jewish Community

Index of the Jewish Records of Vienna

This index was made by Mr. DI Georg Gaugusch ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ), Mrs. Traude Triebel ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and Felix Gundacker ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and contains births and marriages since 1826, deaths since 1866, all up to 1910.

It must be said, that this index contains mistakes - but surely less than 3 per cent. You can view the records  in the Viennese City Archives, for example.

Civil Marriages

The Civil marriages in Vienna between 1870 and 1908

Since 1870, the civil marriage was possible because of the Reichsgesetzblatt number 49 dated May 25th, 1868 and was valid untill August 1st, 1938. Due to the fact, that § 64 of the AGBG 1811 was still active, a Christian part had first to leave the church, whereas a possible Jewish part only needed a marriage refusal of the Rabbi.

These marriages have been recorded in own Vital Statistics; the duplicates are stored in the Viennese City Archives. Univ. Doz. Dr. Anna Lea Staudacher of the Austrian Acadamy of Sciences (ÖAW) has now stored all marriages between 1870 and 1908 (books 1-5). My special thanks go to the Heraldic and Genealogical Society “Adler”, Vienna. Further information about this project can be found in the journals of the “Adler” between 2007 and 2010.

Jewish Resignations

Resignations from the Jewish Community in Vienna between 1868 and 1914

About 18.000 resignations from the Jewish community between 1868 and 1914 show us the change of time in Vienna. Some of them have been baptised, a view didn´t belong to any denomination. Sources of this database, important for so many historians and genealogists, have been the official resignations and the leaving-protocols of the Jewish Community Vienna City, Ottakring and Sechshaus. Further information has been used: records of the Jewish Community, Roman Catholic and Protestant Church as well as Civil records, the proselyte protocols of the JC and protocols of Surname-changes of the Niederösterreichische Statthalterei.

WStLa/mba directs the user to the protocol-number of the resignation, to find in the Viennese City Archives. mba and the number after means district office and the number of the district. If another location is named, the leaving will be found there. In the ros IKG the user will find year and number of the protocol.

A lot of further information, especially of baptisms and biographies, can be found in the printed version.

Converts in Vienna

Converts in Vienna

Between 1782 and 1868 more than 3000 Jews converted in Vienna. Together with the baptized jewish foundlings 6000, up to 1914 more than 18000 left Judaism, mostly poor people, later, in the second half of the 19th century mostly better educated, belonging to the middle class and grande bourgeoisie, also many intellectuals, artists, musicians and writers.

This database was generated from two two-volume books by Anna L. Staudacher, with the kind allowance of Peter Lang international academic publishers :
- Jüdische Konvertiten in Wien 1782-1868 (2001, 460+732 pages - 3000 converts - printed version here  ISBN 3-631-39406-3)
- Jüdisch-protestantische Konvertiten in Wien 1782-1914 (2004, 495+838 pages - 6000 converts - printed version here ISBN 3-631-50413-6)

Genealogical details, as parents of the converts, baptized spouse and children can be found in the printed version.

In addition see also the databases Foundling baptizms, Resignations and Civil marriages.

Foundling Baptisms

Foundling Baptisms in Vienna Between 1816 And 1868

Between 1816 and 1868 more than 3.300 children of Jewish mothers have been baptized under compulsion in the Foundling Home  in Alservorstadt, Vienna.  Until 1843, each child also received a different  surname  after separation from its mother.   By the age of ten, the child could leave the Foundling Home.   If a mother wanted to see her child within these 10 years of the Foundling Home, she had to be baptized also.   Most mothers came from the poverty-stricken strata of Bohemia, Moravia and Hungary.

The sources of the protocols can be found in the Wiener Stadt- und Landesarchiv (Viennese City and County Archive).

Further information can be found in the printed version.

The spelling of surnames were transcribed literally (or) to the letter from original documents.

The spelling of names of cities and townships were proved for correctness and listed in the current  spelling.

When only one number per year is given (for example „1855“), it indicates most of the time back-counted year; thus, not an exact year was given.

When a year is enclosed  in parenthesis (), it stands for the year of reference.

Civil Marriages Graz and Salzburg

The Civil marriages in Graz and Salzburg between 1870 and 1912

Since 1870, the civil marriage was possible because of the Reichsgesetzblatt number 49 dated May 25th, 1868 and was valid untill August 1st, 1938. Due to the fact, that § 64 of the AGBG 1811 was still active, a Christian part had first to leave the church, whereas a possible Jewish part only needed a marriage refusal of the Rabbi.

These marriages have been recorded in own Vital Statistics; in Vienna, duplicates are stored in the Viennese City Archives. In Graz, they are stored at the “Amtshaus Bürgerservice”, in Salzburg at the registry office. Univ. Doz. Dr. Anna Lea Staudacher of the Austrian Acadamy of Sciences (ÖAW) has now stored all marriages between 1870 and 1912. My special thanks go to the Heraldic and Genealogical Society “Adler”, Vienna. Further information about this project can be found in the journal of the “Adler” 26. Band, Heft 8 (October-December 2012).

Passau

Developing database of the

Registers of the Bishopric (Diocese) Passau

This database does not yet contain the entire registers (indices) for all the parishes in the Roman Catholic dioceses Passau, Germany.  Current registers vary from parish to parish; the earliest registers begin in 1580 all the way up to the various designated times of personal data protection laws.

At this point, the current database covers these parts of the Dioceses:

- Marriages:  all parishes
- Baptisms:  by any means not complete; completed are a broad area north of the Inn River, mostly the corner between the Inn River and Danube, almost all of the city of Passau, parts of the lower Bavarian Forest, and an area upwards the Danube
- Death: more in the beginning stages; covered are parts of the Rottal, an area between the Inn River and the Danube, almost everything of the city of Passau, and an area upwards the Danube

Basically the databases cover the following information:

  • Parish
  • Volumes (or sub volumes) and pages
  • Code
    • 1 = Baptisms
    • 2 = Marriages, grooms
    • 3 = Marriages, brides
    • 4 = Burials
  • Surnames
  • Given Name(s)
  • Profession (please note, not in all cases profession is listed)
  • Address including towns (please note, not in all cases address is given)
  • Date including the year
  • The field “Detail”, used for retrievable data, shows the entire data set, including the technical data internally necessary.

The specification of volume number is often still based on the opening up to the register and do not contain, in such cases, a sub volume number. In these cases, the volume number is given according to the descriptive inventory of the parish books of the parishes of the dioceses Passau. The volume numbers are listed under “Lists of Volumes of the Parish…” on the Passau Website at www.matricula-online.eu according to types of sacraments and duration of sub volume number allowing it to expand as well as to identify and search for a specific page.

At this time, more than 2.1 million entries are contained in these data bases, including:

931,278 Entries from baptismal registries
406,714 Entries for grooms from marriage registries, (completed)
364,305 Entries for brides from marriage registries
399,387 Entries from burial registries

IKG Nürnberg

Burials on Jewish Cemeteries in Nürnberg (old and new) 1839-1984

Thomas Albrich: Judenbichl. Die jüdischen Friedhöfe in Innsbruck

http://www.haymonverlag.at/page.cfm?vpath=buecher/buch&titnr=637
